Abstract
This study investigated male participation in antenatal care (ANC) programs at Komamboga Health Center IV, Kampala District, Uganda, aiming to understand socio-economic and serviceprovider factors influencing participation. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 230 men attending ANC services. Snowball sampling was employed, and questionnaires were administered, focusing on socio-economic factors, service-provider interactions, and barriers to participation. The analysis involved chi-square tests and adjusted odds ratios (AORs). Key findings reveal that 52.2% of participants always attended ANC, with significant associations found between frequency of attendance and socio-economic factors (χ2 = 25.14, p < 0.001, AOR = 1.75). Activities during visits indicated high attendance for counseling (69.6%) and clinical examinations (56.5%), with significant associations between attendance and awareness/knowledge levels (χ2 = 12.78, p < 0.001, AOR = 1.48). Logistic barriers (39.1%) were common, affecting participation significantly (χ2 = 8.64, p = 0.013, AOR = 1.31).
Perceived benefits were high (47.8%), associated significantly with participation (χ2 = 14.29, p = 0.002, AOR = 1.56). The study underscores the importance of addressing socio-economic disparities and service-provider factors to enhance male involvement in ANC. Recommendations include tailored interventions targeting logistical barriers and enhancing awareness of the benefits of male participation in ANC. Overall, the findings contribute to the understanding of factors shaping male involvement in ANC, highlighting avenues for improving maternal and child health outcomes in Uganda.
